November is National Family Literacy Month!

Miranda Gremillion

This special month is all about families spending time together to read, tell stories, and enjoy learning. When families read and talk together, kids’ reading and language skills get stronger, and it helps build a love of books and learning that can last a lifetime. Let’s celebrate by finding fun ways to enjoy stories, play word games, or even create our own family storytime!

Here are three fun ways for families to celebrate National Family Literacy Month:

  1. Family Storytime Swap: Each family member picks a favorite book or story to read aloud. Take turns reading, or make it interactive by acting out parts of the story together!

  2. Build a Family Story: Start a story as a family, with each person adding a sentence or two. See where the story takes you! Write it down or record it, so you can read or listen to it later.

  3. Family Book-to-Movie Night: Pick a book that’s been made into a movie, and enjoy it together! Read the book as a family (or listen to the audiobook), then watch the movie version. Afterward, chat about what was different, what you liked better, and which version everyone enjoyed most. This is a fun way to get teens excited about reading and spark interesting family conversations!
